Drinking Establishments

There are many bars in Okpo and Gohyeon, but a few of our favourites are:
  • Alibabar - has great draft beer like Sapporo and Stella Artois (always very cold). The setting is also really nice with an outdoor patio where you can organize a BBQ with the owners. They also open early on the weekends (i.e. 3 pm sometimes)
  • Admiral Hotel Beer Garden - only open in the summer, but a nice place to go for a beer outside, usually starts at 5 pm even on weekends which is too bad.
  • Mama's - good place fo a beer, everyone usually ends up here after a big night out. Always a good place for some dancing because it has the space.
  • Gangsters - good place for a drink as they will make lots of mixed ones, martini anyone!
  • Party! Party! - has a good selection of bottled beer from around the world.
  • German Brewhouse - good for a pint, and can sit out on the patio in the summer.

Things to Bring

Basically bring anything you really like.
  • If moving here for longer than a year bring some furniture, it can make a big difference having your own comfortable sofa and other comforts from home.
  • Baking supplies - cream of tartar, gelatine, icing sugar, chocolate chips (can get some), yeast, food colouring, extracts, corn starch, corn syrup, pans (some cookie sheets will be too big for the ovens here), anything else that's a bit unique.
  • Cereals - if you like a specific type. Can get corn flakes and some other types here.
  • Spices & sauces
  • Specific toiletries you use - toothpaste for sensitive teeth, specific makeup.
  • Seeds - if you want fresh herbs.
  • Sheets & towels - your own are probably softer than the ones provided.
  • Mattress pad - the mattresses here are generally very hard.
  • Holiday stuff- if staying here for Christmas it's nice to have your own things although you can buy stuff here. If you like specific foods for the holidays bring with you, i.e. canned cranberries.

  • There are many gyms around. The Admiral Hotel has one, but if you're willing to drive to Gohyeon, the one at The Geoje Island Hotel (Samsung) is better. All of the equipment is new and there are many treadmills, elliptical trainers, bikes, and various other machines and weights. They also have a swimming pool, a small outdoor area with a few chairs for in the summer (accessed through the pool area), and good changing rooms.

Water Sports:

  • Just past Gohyeon as you go down the hill there is a windsurfing club you can join. You can also pay for waterskiing, wakeboarding, banana boat and other water sports from the dock there.
  • In Jangseungpo there is another windsurfing club. Drive past the main road into the town and take a left at the next light down to a gravel beach on the right.

Okpo Shopping Centre (the mall) - beside the Admiral Hotel, Geoje, South Korea.
  • A small grocery store that has a selection of imported foods such as sour cream, yogurt, cheeses, tonic water, etc.
  • Another store (often called the import lady) sells lots of other imported goods from Costco (located in Daegu) such as cheeses, taco shells, tortillas, meats, salmon, spices, baking supplies, and more.

Beef restaurant, Okpo. Fairly good, Korean seating only and can be very busy on weekends. Near Gangster Bar, look for the restaurant with one big room of floor seating with silver coloured ventilation ducts coming down from the ceiling over the tables.

Rib Restaurant, Okpo. On the opposite side of the street from Beverly Hills 3 and walk towards the Four Fishes Supermarket. When you see the Ritchen store do not cross the street, it is two stores back from the corner. Spicy and mild ribs available. Quite good.

  • Foreigner places in Okpo: Baskin Robbins, Quiznos, Dunkin' Donuts, Dominos Pizza.
  • Underneath the London Pub there is a very good Korean beef restaurant. The marinated beef is great.
  • There is a good pork restaurant commonly referred to as "The Trough." It is in the direction of the London Pub, but on a street running perpendicular to it and back from the water.
  • The Delhi (Indian) is very good and can be quite busy so make a reservation.
  • Mr. Pho (Vietnamese) is good, down near the water and soccer field.

Gojura in the fall.

The main beach on Geoje, about a 20 minute drive from Okpo. Gojura Beach. Facilities at the beach are washrooms and showers. There is a town a short walk away for drinks and food. Lots of parking in the off-season. During the official Korean summer it gets very crowded. Other beaches are Wayheon, on the way to Gojura, and Deokpo, in the opposite direction.
